In 2018, we like our brands to stand for something. Millennials want to know they’re putting their money behind a cause when they choose to buy a product or support a label. On October 23, Mizani made that cause clear: It stands with textured hair of all kinds.

The brand hosted a New York City-based panel dubbed the Night Of Texture, inviting in stylists, educators, and salon owners who’ve built their brands on educating women with textured hair and teaching them how to style their manes in order to feel their very best.

The panel was moderated by Tippi Shorter, celebrity stylist, editorial hair guru, and CEO of the education initative The Texpert Collective. Experts included the likes of Monaé Everett, professional stylist; Michaele Blissett, Salon 718 owner; Andrea Hans and Josie Sanchez, co-owners of Broome Street Society; and Leona Wilson, hair design artist.

For Shorter, the event offered a chance to talk about her passion for texture as the new normal.

“When you think of hair, hair that is wavy, curly, or coily has ridges—that’s the texture feeling. We’re talking about hair that is not naturally straight: hair that has waves, hair that has curls, hair that has coils. Basically anyone who would be concerned about their hair if the weather changed—that would be a person who has textured hair,” she says.

Shorter’s panel emphasized the importance of education when it comes to hair of any texture.

“Obviously textured hair is not brand new, I’ve had it my entire life. What has been different is the visual and public acceptance of what textured hair is as well as products and the education behind it,” she explains.

To put it concisely: Salons need to staff professionals who are capable of (and happy to) support the needs of clients. Everyone from the woman with the slightest wave to the one with full-on coils should feel like they’re getting the product recommendations, styling tips, and advice they need to maintain beautiful hair.

Shorter echoes the sentiment.

“Women who are coming in with wavy hair are actually realizing that their hair has tons of texture and they need texture-specific products to really maximize their swirls and to keep frizz away and to keep the hair from ballooning,” the stylist says. “Women with wavy hair have a lot of the same challenges that women with curly hair do, and women with curly hair have a lot of the same challenges that women with coily hair do.”

Lucky for you, Mizani has pledged its support for every single texture.
