While we often warn against about the dangers of using heat on hair, heat is actually your friend when you’re looking to prevent razor burn.
“The easiest way to help prevent your skin from razor burn is to heat it up,” Georgopoulos says.
Heating up your skin helps open pores and lift facial hair, which allows you to make cleaner passes while shaving. There are several ways to heat up your skin to prep for shaving. In Georgopoulos’ barber shop, he sprays a hot towel with Baxter of California Shave Tonic. The formula helps open pores and lifts facial hair pre-shave, before placing it on his client’s face for a few minutes.
If it is unrealistic for you to recreate the hot towel method at home, the barber suggests taking a hot shower or even heading to the gym and jumping in the sauna followed by a few sprays of the Shave Tonic.
Now that your face and beard are properly prepped, it’s time to shave.
Prepping your skin may be the most important step in your shaving routine, but how you shave your face is a close second. “Aftershave has cooling qualities and offers your skin some moisture and comfort, but it won't prevent the burn,” he says. “It’s the things you do to your face before the shave that will determine your skin’s true destiny.”
