Deep Conditioning 101: How To Use The Product On Natural Hair
Even with better weather on the horizon, take care of your natural hair—your curls are still vulnerable to harsh, potentially drying sun rays! Ashley Brown, American expert stylist and brand ambassador for Mizani, tells us how to deep condition natural hair for ultimate hydration.
“Deep conditioning is a huge staple in the foundation of healthy hair. A house cannot stand without a solid foundation—hair is much the same,” Brown says.
Curly hair and textured hair are considered some of the most fragile hair types, so they require more care.
When your hair is natural, every bend in the cuticle is an opening which puts natural hair at a disadvantage when it comes to moisture and strength...Deep conditioning once a week can significantly improve the health, strength, and manageability of natural hair.
Thankfully, we can learn how to fight dryness and minimize the chances of future breakage occurring using Brown’s professional hair moisturizing measures!
First thing’s first: Upgrade your hair care product line-up!
Here’s Brown’s salon secret to deep conditioning curly hair in the salon:
“My top two favorite products for deep conditioning natural hair both come from the Mizani’s True Textures line,” Brown says. She’s a big fan of the Moisture Replenish Conditioner, which helps maintain the natural curl pattern for touchable texture, and the Intense Moisture Replenish Treatment, which revitalizes and intensifies curls.
She also loves Mizani’s 25 Miracle Milk for a quick refresher. This leave-in conditioner is lightweight yet reduces dryness with every spray— and it’s a great travel companion for when you’re on the go!
Once you’ve hoarded your Mizani hair goods, what’s next? According to Brown, it’s not enough to just buy the right products.
“In order to ensure you are getting the most benefits from your deep conditioning treatment, it is pertinent that you follow these five steps once a week to deep condition properly,” she says.
1. Shampoo. Massage your scalp and “get a good lather going” into the roots, then rinse out thoroughly. Mizani’s True Textures Moisture Replenish Shampoo will do the trick.
2. Gently dry your hair. No heat needed, just a light towel dry!
“Your strands may not be able to absorb all the benefits a conditioner has to offer if the cuticle is full of water,” Brown tells us.
3. Generously apply conditioner.
“Focus on the mid-shaft, ends and any other visible areas of breakage,” Brown says. Comb your conditioning treatment in between strands, “starting with the wide teeth of the comb and finishing with the fine teeth.”
“Work your way from the ends of the hair to the mid shaft, then through the roots. This helps to guarantee even distribution of the conditioner and ensure every strand is reached.”
4. Let it sit for 5 to 15 minutes. Give all that conditioning goodness time to fully absorb!
5. Rinse out the conditioner with cool water. Hot water is so relaxing, but try to resist cranking up that shower dial!
“The cool water helps to close the cuticle,” Brown explains.
